Description

This municipal monument with a wonderful layout and excellent atmosphere is located in the residential area "Cronestein" in Leiden, in a private country estate with a spacious communal garden and access to the Trekvliet.

The Zoeterwoudseweg is located on the edge of the center and the "Cronestein" district. This district is known for its characteristic buildings and historic charm. The street is a passage to the very nearby Cronesteyn Park. Because of these green areas and parks, this neighborhood offers a pleasant living environment with sufficient facilities, such as schools, playgrounds, (veterinarians/dental) doctors, shopping centers (e.g. the canopy track) and local shops (e.g. Herenstraat). There are three different supermarkets within 10 to 15 minutes walking distance, Lammenschans train station is less than 10 minutes walking distance and there are also several bus stops near the house. The highways (N206/A4/N11) are very easily accessible and the center is a maximum of 5 minutes by bike from this great house.

The Zoeterwoudseweg number 19 in part of the historic building "Ma Retraite". The house has an attractive, beautiful appearance and as soon as you enter you will be amazed by the space and light it offers. This house is part of a complex with numbers 13 to number 19. Together these apartments form a VvE. The houses have a shared garden that is used in consultation and some mooring places on the Trekvliet that can be used in consultation with the VvE. People also sometimes swim at the Trekvliet. The garden is an oasis of peace in the hectic pace of contemporary life.

To fully understand this, here is a bit of history about this characteristic part of Leiden:
The Zoeterwoudseweg 13-19 plot is located between the Zoeterwoudseweg and the Trekvliet. In 1603 there would have been a fulling mill with a small miller's house on the site. In 1782, the miller's house was converted into a mansion with houses for the mill hands behind it. From that moment on, the mill was converted into a sawmill. In the mid-19th century, the whole came into the hands of the Mannekus brothers, who modernized it into a steam sawmill. The company and the director's home became separated in 1919. In 1920 the house was sold separately and became 'Ma Retraite'. Wood was traded on the business premises behind the house until 1976, after which a yacht yard was established. The building was sold in 1986, renovated and divided into residential units and eventually became a (municipal) monument. A number of people involved in this last restoration still live on this site. This piece of company history has been preserved outside the city of Leiden for the future.

The layout is as follows:

Ground floor:
When we walk through the cast iron gate we arrive at the large gravel path. We walk down this path to the last house in the row and there is the front door of this charming house. When we go through the front door we enter the hall. Here is the meter cupboard, the spacious toilet, the stairs upstairs and on the right the door to the living room followed by the large open kitchen. The living room is located on the south and is always light and welcoming. The kitchen is fully equipped with sufficient storage space and has a custom-made and manually patinated brass kitchen unit with induction plates as a unique eye-catcher. The kitchen has beautiful natural light.

Through the kitchen you can go to the garden, storage room and/or collective storage rooms. The storage room of number 19 is located directly opposite the kitchen, creating a private corner on the communal grounds where you can enjoy the sun. Because this is the corner house, you can also walk past the house via the side garden (paved path). We go to the first floor via the stairs in the hall.

First floor:
At the top of the stairs we arrive at the landing with a huge storage space to our left. On the right is the first bedroom. This room is located on the south and therefore has a lot of sunlight. This room is currently used as an office and guest room. This room offers space for a 160x200 double bed. Opposite the storage space is the bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower, sink and toilet. The house's plumbing (taps, toilets and sink/fountain) was replaced in 2020. Next to the bathroom is the cupboard with central heating boiler. On the left at the end of the landing is the second spacious bedroom with evening light. Both bedrooms have a beautiful roof construction which is clearly visible. This double roof construction really adds charm to this house.

The current owners will say goodbye to this wonderful home and place with pain in their hearts, but will start new chapters in their respective lives, which will take place elsewhere.
